In the School’s archives there is a reference to a sport being played here in 1891 where the ball could not be thrown forward. In the modern era, our roots go back to 1973. We are a club sport that receives some aid from the school. Mount Rugby is the University's first team to travel overseas. We have been to Ireland twice (in 1999 and 2004), and are going to Argentina in the spring of 2006.
The Mount plays against many high caliber teams that include Penn State, Penn, Duke, N.C. State, Delaware, UNC-Gr., Navy, GW, Georgetown, Richmond, William and Mary, American, Bucknell, Loyola, Catholic, St. Joseph’s, Rutgers, Drexel, Johns Hopkins, and James Madison. We are in Division II of the Potomac Rugby Union (PRU). The PRU is a sub union of the Mid Atlantic Rugby Union (MARFU). The Mount was the PRU Champions in the fall of 2000.
Don Briggs has been our coach for 9 years and is a Level III rugby coach--the highest level obtainable. He played for the Washington Rugby Club for ten years and was an All East prop. He was selected to play against the French National team in 1976. And in 1990 he started the Frederick Rugby Club. In 2001 he accompanied the Naval Academy on their tour of Australia.
We are deeply involved in community service and every year we participate in the March for Life in Washington, D.C.. Playing rugby at the Mount is a compliment to your student life. We take it seriously because we are taking the time to do it and therefore want to do it well, but it is only a compliment. The program is demanding and will in the end be the best time management course you have ever taken.
